Mission
Our mission is to demonstrate the continuity of art history from the 20th century to the present and to explain these principles educationally and entertainingly. The Museum NOU serves as a third place for locals and tourists, offering exhibitions and a unique surrealist research bureau where visitors can engage in playful activities inspired by the surrealists.
The first exhibition, SUR PLAY, will present more than twenty contemporary artists worldwide in a dialogue with surrealist classics.
History
Located in the historic district of El Raval, the museum works with all its time layers. The story begins in the XVII century with the classical church of San Agustin, built on Calle Junta De Comerç: due to unknown circumstances, our building is connected through the back of the site to the existing wing of the old convent of the church.
The NOU’s first exhibition continues this historical parallel, preserving the Southern-style interior with load-bearing columns and brick. Its natural light will be hidden under the traditional Catalan vault ceiling, but our primary color will always leave a thin red line between the present and the past.
